SUMMARY:Building Cities and Neighbourhoods for Children and All Ages
DESCRIPTION:Background\nThe OECD report Cities for All Ages\, supported by the Ministry of Land\, Infrastructure\, Transport\, and Tourism of Japan\, aims to promote key policy actions to create more age-inclusive cities. The share of older people in OECD cities is rising fast\, while many large cities continue to grow and attract young people. Without age-inclusive policies\, cities face significant social and economic consequences\, ranging from poorer health outcomes and higher isolation to workforce loss\, increased public spending\, and brain drain. The Cities for All Ages report explores how local and national governments can address these challenges and make cities work for all generations. It highlights strategies such as adapting urban design and land use planning for more accessible cities\, providing age-friendly housing\, and engaging both young and older people in labour and consumer markets. To drive progress\, the report offers a checklist of nine policy actions across three key areas – strategy setting\, resource development and stakeholder co-ordination – to help local and national governments shape cities for all ages. \nThe project Building Child-Friendly Neighbourhoods\, supported by the Van Leer Foundation\, elaborated an OECD-wide monitoring framework\, which lays out the neighbourhood elements that matter for children’s well-being and development\, and maps available cross-national indicators. The identified neighbourhood elements encompass aspects of the built environment\, communities’ social relationships\, and children’s access to basic services such as schools and health services. An OECD-wide monitoring of children’s neighbourhood conditions can support local and national policy makers in building child-friendly neighbourhoods and in attenuating geographical disparities by facilitating resource allocation\, collaboration across sectors and levels of government\, and cross-country learning with respect to effective policy tools. The project also summarises practical considerations for national and local policy makers and other stakeholders involved in data-driven efforts to improve children’s neighbourhoods. It highlights how locally adapted policy solutions hold greater promise to mitigate the locational disadvantage that some children experience. Moreover\, it emphasises the need for more rigorous implementation and evaluations to increase policies’ effectiveness and gain a more complete understanding of the potential of place-based policies to build stronger neighbourhoods for children. \n  \nFormat of the Meeting\nThe webinar will be held virtually over Zoom. SUMMARY:Zakopane (Poland): XIII National Congress of Large Families
DESCRIPTION:INVITATION\nDear Large Families\, \nFor the 13th time\, we have the pleasure of inviting you to the National Congress of Large Families\, which this time will take place in Zakopane on June 6-8\, 2025.\nWith pride and full conviction\, we announce that the slogan of this year’s Congress is – “Family on top” – which takes on additional meaning\, considering the location of this event. \nWith our slogan\, we want to draw attention to the important role of a well-functioning family. It is like a healthy mountain spring for the whole society\, which\, although small\, can give rise to a great river\, flowing through endless areas\, giving them life-giving water. Such a river gives great development and bears fruit as long as the source is clean and healthy. That is why it is so important to take care of the family\, which we want to draw attention to once again during our Congress. We want to show the world how joyful\, energetic\, well-organized and positive large families can be. We also remind you how little it takes to create optimal conditions for functioning and development for large families. And the benefits from this will be enormous. After all\, large families are the obvious solution to the growing demographic crisis. \nI can’t wait for our meeting in Zakopane\, to once again demonstrate together how much wealth is achieved by a couple who openly welcomes another child into their family. It’s impossible to count\, although we can. According to Bowen Family Systems Theory\, family members are interconnected and interdependent\, and “family should be viewed as a system”. (1) By addressing factors such as mental health\, malnutrition\, and economic hardship at a family-level\, we can better address root causes of diseases and implement preventive strategies. \nHealth promotion and prevention must begin at the family level too. Families are where good health habits are cultivated and passed on\, ensuring the wellbeing of all generations. A healthy\, functional family system is essential to preventing illness\, fostering emotional support\, and improving overall quality of life. \nThe quality of family relationships plays a significant role in mental and physical health. Studies consistently show that strong family bonds contribute to better health outcomes. According to recent studies\, maternity and paternity lead to a better personal health and improve the sense of meaning and life in general; also the sense of future is enhanced\, and it increases in old age. (2) \nParents\, grandparents\, and siblings may serve as informal caregivers\, essential yet invisible and undervalued (their work does not appear in the national GDP). Still\, family caregivers “are recognised as the backbone of the health care system”\, (3) providing unpaid\, often unrecognized\, care to children\, elderly and chronically ill relatives. \nStates should adopt a “family impact lens” (4) in their public health and demographic policies to better address the challenges posed by global population changes. Supporting families and empowering them to fulfil their roles will lead to better health outcomes and will contribute significantly to achieving the SDGs. \nPollution\, malnutrition\, stress\, poor working conditions\, inadequate healthcare\, lack of social security\, and insufficient access to clean water and sanitation are all factors taken into consideration in the 2030 Agenda\, but\, without a “family impact lens”\, very little attention is given to the impact they have on families. Incorporating and involving the families into health promotion strategies is essential to creating a sustainable future. \nThis should be done ensuring that family dynamics\, diversity\, and caregiving burdens are considered in all population health discussions and policy initiatives. Article 16.3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights must be fully realized\, ensuring that families are granted their rightful place in society \nFamilies must be recognized as central to achieving health equity and population goals. By investing in families\, supporting their functions\, and recognizing their importance\, states will foster a healthier\, more sustainable future for people\, communities\, and the planet. \n(1. SUMMARY:From Departure to Destination: Revitalising Regions for the Future
DESCRIPTION:Mapineq – Mapping inequalities through the life course \n  \nWe would be delighted to welcome you to the online event \n  \nFrom Departure to Destination: Revitalising Regions for the Future \nTuesday\, 25 February 2025\, 1:00-2:30 PM CET (Zoom) \n  \nMapineq invites you to a discussion on the growing regional disparities and how to break the vicious cycle many local communities find themselves in: population decline\, youth outmigration\, shrinking resources\, and the dismantling of essential services. In addition\, many of these areas are increasingly associated with populist movements and anti-migration sentiment\, further reducing their attractiveness for newcomers and investment. \nHow can these communities break free from this cycle? Can they become appealing enough to retain younger residents while also attracting new ones? Join our expert speakers as we explore practical examples and strategies for addressing local challenges\, fostering growth\, enhancing collaboration\, and revitalizing communities. The language of the meeting will be German\, and there will be German-English interpretation service available for international audience. \n  \nRegistration \n  \nSpeakers: \n\nElena Kountidou\, Managing Director\, Neue Deutsche Medienmacher*innen\nJan Paul Heisig\, Professor of Sociology\, Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung\nSamina Sultan\, Senior Economist\, Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft Köln e.V.\nThomas Wobben\, Director for Legislative Works\, European Committee of the Regions\n\n  \nWe look forward to your participation in this important discussion!

SUMMARY:Siblings Day
DESCRIPTION:On May 31\, ELFAC welcomes Siblings Day\, urging all member associations and their associates to openly celebrate the date in their respective countries and their communities.\nELFAC has good reasons to congratulate itself on the experience firstly launched on May 31\, 2014 and the decision taken at the general meeting of September 18\, 2014 to continue Europe-wide the institution of Siblings Day. \nSiblings Day is a day when we celebrate the spirit of families in a perspective of great solidarity\, identity and sharing. We welcome all families\, from families without children or with one or two children to larger families. Large families with three or more children are those who live more intensely the special dynamism of siblings and the great variety and richness of their relationships. \nWe are sure that with the imagination of each one and by the joy and inspiration of our families\, Brothers and Sisters Day\, May 31\, will become\, year after year\, an ever stronger and brighter social reality in our communities\, in our European countries. \n \n

SUMMARY:The impact of climate anxiety in family formation in Europe
DESCRIPTION:“There is an urgent need for further research into the emotional impact of climate change on children and young people.” \n\n\n\nTo actively engage with this issue\, the International Federation for Family Development (IFFD) is orchestrating a series of events aimed at soliciting the perspectives of youth from around the world. Recognizing that young people are the architects of their own future\, these initiatives empower them to learn\, deliberate\, and make decisions that will shape their destinies. It is our firm belief that by affording the youth a voice in shaping their world\, we nurture their passion for effecting positive change from a young age. This\, in turn\, contributes to the cultivation of future leaders who are committed to making a difference in our global society.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe conclusions and final recommendations of the event will be made public at the 2024 IFFD Briefing during the 62nd Session of the Commission For Social Development at the United Nations Headquarters in New York (5 to 14 February 2024). The Commission will also celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the International Year of the Family. \n\n\nCALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS AND WORKING METHOD\n\n\n1.- The call for groups of 4-8 young people or individuals aged 18-34 is now open to submit a proposal for a statement on one or several of the discussion points above. \n2.- Registration for each group member must be completed at this link before January 20th. \n3.- Participation in the event can be in person or online. \n4.- Each group will have the opportunity to present their statement at the event through the designated representative registered. \n5.- In case more than 8 groups complete their registration\, some of them can be asked to do a joint statement and geographical distribution will be prioritized. \nThe statements should be configured as advocacy plans\, including the following contents: \n1. Establish measurable objectives. \n2. Define key messages. \n3. Determine the communication activities to deliver key messages. \n4. Decide what resources are necessary to complete each activity. \n5. Establish a timeline and responsible party for each activity. \n6. Fix how to evaluate whether you have reached your objectives. \n\n\nDISCUSSION POINTS\n\n\n\n\n1.- Why are young people (18-34) more worried about climate change than adults aged 55 or older? \n2.- Why do one-third or more young people think a couple should consider climate change when deciding whether to have children? \n3.- How does having a child result in considerable emissions of CO2 per year? \n4.- Why have so many joined campaigns pledging to not have kids until the governments take more action to combat climate change? \n5.- How does climate change pose a risk to long-lasting mental health problems? \n6.- Can it be that young people are not having children for the simple reason of not wanting them? \n7.- Are young people too worried about the environment to have children or more worried about the environment after having children? \n8.- What are the ethical\, environmental\, livelihood\, and political considerations behind climate change concerns and reproductive decision-making? \n9.- Can the need for an economy less hostile to young families be the real reason behind blaming climate anxiety for falling birth rates? \n10.- Can children born today and in the future be disproportionately affected by climate change? \n11.- Are levels of eco-anxiety growing\, particularly among children and young people? \n12.- Will climate change affect physical health\, mental health\, and social relations? \n\n\nPROGRAM\n\n\n\n\n10.00 -13.00: LISZT INSTITUTE\n\n\n\n\nMeeting of participants to review the Discussion Points and agree on the conclusions \n\n\n\n\n15.00 -17.00: EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT\nWELCOMING REMARKS\n\nRoberto Ciambetti \nPresident of the Veneto Regional Council\nMember of the European Committee of the Regions\nCommission for Environment\, Climate Change and Energy\nand Commission for Natural Resources \n\n\nOPENING REMARKS\nKinga Joó \nMember of the European Economic and Social Committee\nInternational Advisor to the President of the\nNational Association of Large Families of Hungary\nPresident of the Social Responsibility Board at the\nNational Cooperation Fund of Hungary \n\n\nPRESENTATION OF YOUTH STATEMENTS\nAND INTERACTIVE DISCUSSION\n\n\n\n\nPoland\nNetherlands\nFrance\nSpain \n\n\nMODERATOR\n\nIgnacio Socías \nDirector of International Relations\nInternational Federation for Family Development \n\n\nKEYNOTE SPEECH\n\nEmmanuel Pont \nSociologist\nAuthor of ‘Faut-il arrêter de faire\ndes enfants pour sauver la planète?’ \n\n\nCLOSING REMARKS\n\nEdina Tóth \nMember of the European Parliament\nCommittee on the Environment\, Public Health and Food Safety\nand Subcommittee on Public Health \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n REGISTRATION
