SUMMARY:10th International Advocacy Workshop (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:More than 500 students and young professionals from 39 countries and diverse cultural and academic backgrounds have attended the past editions of the IFFD International Advocacy Workshop\, together with a group of senior observers. This 10th year is organized in a hybrid mode\, with a limit of 100 active participants and no cost involved. \nThe course intends to critically assess the field of international human rights and development advocacy\, its institutions\, strategies\, and key actors. DESCRIPTION:  \nWorld Family Summit 2022 |June 28 and 29\, 2022 | Geneve – Swiss \nPalais des Nations\nRoom Tempus 2 \n\nThe World Family Organization\, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research – UNITAR in partnership with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs\, the United Nations Division for Inclusive Sustainable Development\, the United Nations\, the United Nations Financing for Sustainable Development Office and the United Nations NGO Branch\, have the honor to invite you to the World Family Summit 2022\, which also will celebrate the World Family Organization 75th Anniversary. \nIn launching the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development the United Nations Member States and the Society as a whole recognized that the dignity of the individual is fundamental and the Agenda’s goals and targets should be met for all nations and people and for all segments of society. Leaving no one behind is the overarching principle and transforming the Agenda’s commitments into effective actions requires a precise understanding of the target population. Women\, men\, children\, youth\, older persons\, persons with disability\, people living with HIV\, indigenous people\, refugees\, internally displaced persons and migrants\, all of them have in common the fact that they belong to a Family living at Local Level. \nSupporting local authorities and families to implement the Agenda 2030 with all its 17 SDGs is an exceptional opportunity to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic crisis by promoting better community integration with the public sector leading to renewed hope\, harmony\, growth and job creation while ensuring sustainability. \n  \n Further information about the Summit is available at http://www.worldfamilysummit.org

SUMMARY:Workshop in Dublin (Ireland): Bringing Large Families Back on the Policy Agenda
DESCRIPTION:CONCEPT NOTE \nRecent studies show that large families are much more common than assumed in wealthy nations (Curran 2021\, Fahey 2017\, Bujard et al. 2019)\, but receive very little research and policy attention. While recent decades have seen a poverty research and policy focus on lone parent families\, children in large families face a similar risk of poverty today. In some countries (e.g. Ireland)\, children in large families experience a higher risk of poverty than those in lone parent households. This international workshop aims to mainstream a renewed research and policy focus on large families\, learn from international data and experiences\, and bring together an interdisciplinary field of researchers. The goal is to refocus inequality and poverty studies on an important\, but often overlooked\, aspect of contemporary children’s circumstances: children’s family size. Policymakers\, advocates\, and practitioners are also invited to highlight policy problems and discuss solutions. \nHistorically\, family size was a recognised risk for child poverty. Large families received substantial policy attention up through the mid-20th century. The benefits and tax systems in most advanced economies recognised the increased cost of childbearing for families with three\, four\, or more children through child allowances and other public supports. As demographic changes saw declining birth rates and smaller family sizes\, the policy focus shifted towards lone parents facing poverty and how they might be supported. Yet\, although the relative share of households with large families has declined\, a substantive number of children continue to grow up in large families (inter alia Curran 2019\, Fahey 2017). And modern social transfer systems tend to neglect this still very relevant child poverty risk. Social policy interventions targeted at large families now range from punitive policies that cap tax and social benefits at a particular family size – such as the UK’s two-child limit – or the slow neglect of benefits specifically aimed at children in large families (e.g. Germany and Ireland have eradicated traditionally higher rates of child benefit for the third and subsequent children) to the more pro-natal policies that support children in large families still in place in parts of Eastern Europe. \nThis workshop aims to revive this under-recognised perspective on inequality and poverty risk for children. We welcome papers that address large families from diverse disciplinary backgrounds\, methodological perspective and across the globe. In particular\, we are interested in papers that contribute to our empirical understanding of: \n\nWhat constitutes a large family today? Some studies draw the line at 3 children (Bujard et al. 2019)\, while other estimates consider only four and more children (Curran 2019).\nWhat is the socio-demographic profile of large families? In popular – and potentially harmful – discourses\, two competing extremes often dominate the debate and media portrayals that the modern large family is either a rich one (purposefully large to show they can afford to be) or a poor one (purposefully to claim child-related benefits). We are seeking papers that detail the profile of contemporary large families as well as contributions that scrutinise these discourses and public perceptions through empirical analysis.\nHow are social policy interventions target large families? Single-country or comparative policy papers are sought that analyse social policy interventions addressing large families\, including changes over time. This includes policy simulations on the distributive effects of how number of siblings are treated in benefit and tax systems.\n\nConfirmed keynote speakers: \nProf. Tony Fahey (University College Dublin\, Ireland) \nDr. Ruth Patrick (University of York\, United Kingdom) \nDr. Martin Bujard (Federal Institute for Population Research\, Germany) \nSubmit your abstract by 30 March 2022 (10.00 IST\, Dublin) at the following online form: https://forms.gle/gz7gPxcdNMckcnef6 \nThe conference is free of charge. Catering is provided throughout the conference for presenters\, including a conference dinner. We will be able to cover travel and accommodation\, but please indicate in your submission if you would like to be considered for a travel grant. \nThis conference aims to build a new network of researchers interested in large families\, alongside a special issue. Therefore\, an in-person workshop will be prioritised\, in line with government COVID-19 restrictions as of spring/summer 2022\, to facilitate networking and personal exchanges. \n\nOrganisers: \nDr. Stephan Köppe\, UCD School of Social Policy\, Social Work and Social Justice\, stephan.koeppe@ucd.ie\nDr. Megan Curran\, Center on Poverty & Social Policy at Columbia\nUniversity\, megan.curran@columbia.edu \n\nThe conference is supported by the IRC New Foundations grant Large Families: Policy Learning and Solutions.

The Civil Society Declaration tries to integrate family needs into the various Megatrends proposed by the United Nations’ Secretary General. [2] At the same time\, the Declaration will help with the European Child Guarantee adopted in June 2021\, to design and implement services and interventions that reduce the effects of poverty and social exclusion on children in need of support and protection. \nThe Civil Society Declaration will be an effective instrument to foster all the support possible among a broad spectrum of partners. [3] The voices of the families that integrate the Declaration\, together with the substantial contributions from experts\, are key to addressing the challenges of many families. Thanks to the continuous efforts of the various organizations involved up until now\, the Civil Society Declaration will be launched in the framework of the Observance of the International Day of the Family 2022. From now on\, it will spur support to best prepare for the 30th Anniversary of the International Year of the Family in 2024. \n  \nPROGRAMME\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOPENING REMARKS\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nINTERACTIVE DISCUSSION\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCLOSING REMARKS

SUMMARY:15 May 2022: International Day of Families on “Families and Urbanization”\, United Nations
DESCRIPTION:Urbanization is one of the most important megatrends shaping our world and the life and wellbeing of families worldwide. Sustainable urbanization is related to the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and targets\, such as SDG1 (Poverty eradication) SDG 3\, (Good health and well-being); SDG 11 (Make cities and human settlements inclusive\, safe\, resilient and sustainable)\, SDG10 (Reduce inequality within and among countries). All the above SDGs and targets depend on how well urbanization is managed to benefit families and enhance the well-being of all generations living in the cities. \nThis year’s theme of the International Day of Families on “Families and Urbanization” is to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable and family-friendly urban policies. \nVirtual Event\nFriday\, 13 May – 10:00-11:15 AM (New York time) | 4:00-5:15 pm (Central European Time)\nUNDESA will organize a panel discussion that will include presentations from academics\, civil society and urban authorities. The event will include the launch of the background paper as well as presentation of civil society initiatives such as Venice Declaration and Civil Society Declaration for IYF+30. \nA major research paper is to be launched at the observance as part of the preparations for IYF+30. The keynote address by the author will mainly examine current urbanization trends from a family perspective. \nThe paper on “Migration\, Urbanization\, and the Family Dimension” focuses on the impact of urbanization and migration on families. SUMMARY:ELFAC Side Event in the UN ECOSOC Youth Forum 2022 (online)
DESCRIPTION:Economic and Social Council Youth Forum 2022 \n“COVID-19 recovery: Youth taking action for a sustainable future” \n \nSide event of the European Large Families Confederation (ELFAC) \n“After Covid-19:  ideas for a sustainable future” – ONLINE \n18 April 2022  – 10 – 11 am (EDT) | 4 – 5 pm (CET) \n\nBackground\n\nYoung people from large families\, like all young people in the world\, have been strongly affected and impacted by Covid-19\, which has upset various aspects of their daily lives and projects for their future. \nAs work and health generated more unsteadiness\, the average time for transition to adulthood   has even been extended. It has become more difficult to create a stable situation that would allow young people to start their adult lives and take major important steps such as finding a job\, getting a house\, building a family\, and having children. \nForced coexistence has had its consequences on mental health and social life. Education has suffered a strong backlash\, since distance learning has created worrying educational and social gaps. Gender equality has been put in severe discussion. Many of the 2030 Agenda’s SDGs were badly affected by the Pandemic and deserve new thinking and new efforts. The experience gained can provide the key to build a future tailored on Youth\, where they themselves are the protagonists. A future where the climate crisis demands strong and brave actions and sustainability provide the pathway. \n\nObjectives of the side event\n\nThe primary objective of this side event is to create a space for discussion and sharing where young people from different associations (particularly of large families) can tell the impacts of Covid-19 on their lives\, in order to understand which are the points where it is necessary to concentrate in the reconstruction of a post-pandemic life adapted to their needs. \nFor this reason\, another important objective is to collect innovative ideas about actions to be taken both locally and internationally to face the consequences of the crisis in a sustainable way\, sharing also best practices implemented in their territories. \nA third fundamental objective is to encourage mutual listening across cultures on the basis of which to produce a number of concrete proposals to support the development of effective Youth policies. \n\nGuiding Questions for presentations and discussion\n\n\nDo you think that living in a large family has had an impact on the quality of life of the members of the family? Did you lack resources such as devices\, internet connection\, interpersonal relationships\, income\, space etc.…?\nWhich are the positive and negative aspects of having a large family during a crisis like Covid’s?\nWhat do you think were the most affected aspects of your life as a result of the pandemic?\nAfter the pandemic and forced cohabitation\, has your idea about the number of children you would like to have in the future changed?\nAfter the pandemic\, do you think you have the same chances as before when it comes to transitions to adulthood? Looking for a job\, a house etc. … What should be done about it?\nHave measures been taken in your area to address the consequences that the pandemic has had on young people?\nIn your opinion\, what are the shortcomings and the areas in which governments and international organizations should focus more? And how could sustainability be included in such measures??\nDo you think young people are sufficiently taken into account in the public arena?\nDo you agree on recognizing voting rights for minors\, if only with a proxy to parents or tutors?\nFrom your personal experience\, do you think Covid-19 has had an impact on gender equality? If so\, what could be the possible restart points?\n\n\nFormat and Agenda \n\nThe event is an open online discussion of 1 hour\, where young people from different backgrounds (in terms of age\, family\, country\, rural or urban area…) will bring experiences and testimonies. A moderator will manage the discussion among participants starting from the guiding questions.Interventions will provide the basis for a statement draft on supporting young people in the transition to a future more sustainable adult life. \nAGENDA (18 April 2022 – 10 am to 11 am EDT | 4 pm to 5 pm CET)          \n10 am  Welcome – Raul Sanchez\, secretary general of ELFAC and moderator \n10:05   Introduction – Regina Maroncelli\, president of ELFAC \n10:10   Questions addressed for discussion with young people from large families \n\nSerena Anupöld\, Estonia\nChiara Ledda and Valeria Maroncelli – Italy\nSofia Ros\, Nicolas Molina – Spain\nBalazs Kelemen – Hungary\nMafalda Neves e Castro – Portugal\nAlbert Dima\, Rafael Rosu and Maria Sohterus – Romania\nMaja Jésmanowicz – Poland\nGerald\, Klaus and Clara Mueller\, Germany\nMadara Sproģe\, Latvia\n\n10:55   Final remarks: Raul Sanchez\, secretary general of ELFAC \n\nPlatform to be used and Registration link\n\n \nThe side event will be broadcast live on YouTube on this link: \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOL9MF9yFms \nPeople following can intervene with comments or questions through the comments section. \nThe event will stay recorded on YouTube on the same link (in the ELFAC channel on YouTube).

Children were particularly effected by the restrictions of the lockdowns\, the difficulties to cope with digitization of education and the fear for the situation. All studies show that children were highly affected during the lockdowns\, suffering of higher degrees of stress. Women mental health has been put under exceptional stress\, requiring to be at once mothers\, school teachers\, carers\, and workers 24/24. In problematic family’s violence has increased. Families with works that were affected by the pandemic fell into poverty and children poverty has increased in many countries. The burden of managing normality (work\, school\, health\, nutrition\, entertainment…) in critical conditions\, and the necessity to balance work and family\, fell completely in families and the relief provided was not effective. Large families experienced problems in acquiring the digital devices needed for distant education and remote working\, broad band was often insufficient for the use of the whole family. The lockdown demonstrated the inequity of housing spaces in many urban settlements\, where large houses are too expensive\, gardens and balcony are often a real luxury. Urban nature (parks\, playgrounds\, bike and footpath) became most desirable for all. \nWritten Statement: Large families and COVID-19 \n  \nPROGRAM\n5.30 pm WELCOME AND GREETINGS: Regina Maroncelli\, President of ELFAC \n5.40 pm LARGE FAMILIES AND POVERTY\, A GLOBAL OVERVIEW: Prof. Anis Ben Brick\, Associate Professor\, College of Public Policy\, Hamad Bin Khalifa University (Doha\, Qatar) \n5.50 pm HOUSING POVERTY: Dr. Gabriel Amitsis\, professor in West Attica University (Athens\, Greece) \n6.00 pm LIVING IN A CROWD: Carlos and Carolina Aponte Pardo\, parents of 9 children (Bogotá\, Colombia) \n6.10 pm FIGHTING POVERTY\, THE POLISH FAMILY CARD: Dr. Anna Bebel\, Wroclaw University of Economic and Business (Wroclaw\, Poland) \n6.20 pm COVID\, THE LESSON LEARNT? SUMMARY:Ministerial Conference on Demographic Resilience: Shaping's Europe Demographic Future (online)
DESCRIPTION:Many countries in Europe and Central Asia face rapid demographic change: people have fewer children and live longer\, and many leave their countries to look for opportunities elsewhere. Societies are growing older and\, in many cases\, are getting smaller\, especially in Eastern Europe where low fertility rates are compounded by high levels of outward migration. \nThe hybrid online/in-person Ministerial Conference on Demographic Resilience aims to contribute to strengthening the capacity of countries in Europe and Central Asia to respond to the profound demographic shifts the region is experiencing. \nThe conference\, held on 1-2 December 2021 under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria\, will convene heads of state or government\, ministers and other representatives of governments\, civil society\, the private sector\, academia and the international community. It will kick off a Decade for Demographic Resilience that will mobilize political support for policy responses that are comprehensive\, grounded in evidence\, and based on human rights. And it will provide a platform for the exchange of experiences and sound policy advice\, enabling countries to mitigate negative effects and fully harness the opportunities that come with demographic change. \nAgenda and Speakers \nRegister here if you are interested in attending the Ministerial Conference “Shaping Europe’s Demographic Future.” \nRegistered participants will be able to enter the virtual conference space\, follow sessions online\, and interact with exhibition booths at the Conference Expo and with other participants in the networking lounge.

SUMMARY:10th FAMILY FESTIVAL OF TRENTO
DESCRIPTION:The “measures” of social\, economic and demographic sustainability in the post-Covid19 period. Policies and indicators for the competitiveness and quality of life of territories\nTo cope with the health\, social and economic shock produced by the Covid- 19 pandemic\, governments have adopted expansionary ‘measures’ aimed at strengthening the health systems\, preserving the productive system\, safeguarding jobs and household income. The extraordinary and exceptional ‘measures’ contained in the recovery and resilience plans provide for huge investments and major reforms\, with the aim of modernising public administration\, strengthening the productive system and intensifying efforts to combat poverty and social exclusion by fostering social cohesion processes. The 2021 Family Festival (tenth edition) will focus on the “measures” adopted/to be adopted to guarantee social\, economic and above all demographic sustainability in the post-Covid19 period\, and will initiate a debate with institutes expert in “measurements”\, to discuss the impacts produced by the “measures”. \nA week of events\, conferences and seminars to give voice to the “measures” and “measurements” activated on a local\, national and European scale. The aim is to have a scientific debate with the main organisations involved in data analysis\, reporting and assessment\, in order to make up for the limited aptitude present in our country for measuring performance and using data and figures to take more informed decisions. \nThe key words are therefore “understanding” and “awareness”\, to help public decision-makers take the best “measures” in order to adequately respond to the needs of the community\, increase competitiveness\, support the socio-economic development of the territories and raise the quality of life of citizens and families. With reference to the combination of “pandemic” and “quality of life”\, there are two closely interconnected dimensions. The first has to do with the major changes produced by the Covid pandemic in fundamental aspects of human life (social relations\, self-fulfilment\, etc.). The second shows that Covid has made territories that offer services supporting the “quality of life” of citizens and families more attractive. In this second case\, the focus will be on what territories can offer in terms of infrastructure\, good governance\, education\, welfare\, safety and security\, environmental quality\, culture and opportunities for citizens and families. The pandemic has taught us that\, alongside economic factors\, the “measure” of the quality of life is and will increasingly be an important component of the attractiveness of a territory\, because it attracts individuals\, families and businesses to that territory\, to the detriment of the territory of origin\, thus generating capital for the development of the chosen territory. \nMore information and program (in Italian\, English and German): www.festivaldellafamiglia.eu

SUMMARY:IV Budapest Demographic Summit
DESCRIPTION:Novák Katalin\n\n\n  \nA very warm welcome to pro-family thinkers\, decision-makers to Budapest\, Hungary\, where we believe there is no future without strong families. \nThe Budapest Demographic Summit is the forum where politicians\, church leaders\, experts\, representatives of the media\, corporate sector and science meet every two years since 2015 to discuss the main issues affecting families. Today\, some claim that environmental challenges are caused by starting families and having children. They perceive having children is damaging. Some think sustainability and family are incompatible. Therefore\, this year’s summit is focusing on demography and sustainability. \nIs it worth discussing sustainability if not enough children are being born? What does science say and what is being broadcasted in the media? What role ideology plays in the assessment of families and environmental protection? Are the challenges African nations face caused by the high birth rate or the lack of infrastructure? What can Europe do in times of the demographic crisis? These and many similar issues will be raised in this year’s summit. \nIn Hungary\, the community’s fundamental building block is family. The Hungarian government\, which has been in office since 2010\, has pursued a family-friendly policy\, entailing countless measures not only standing by family values\, but supporting the starting of new families\, protecting traditional values and providing opportunities for a fulfilling\, happy family life for all citizens. \nSustainability today is a key issue\, as humankind leads a wasteful and environmentally harmful lifestyle in many respects. We again would like to live together with nature in harmony\, paying due regard to our community values. \nThe preservation of our created world also entails the conservation of our homes\, our homeland and our culture for the generations to come\, for our children and grandchildren. For a healthier\, more sustainable and more self-aware lifestyle\, we need to take forward the older generations’ life experiences\, we need to make sure that our children are healthy\, and that we have morally and financially strong families. We learn the most important values at home. How we live as adults are first and foremost a result of the spiritual\, intellectual and moral upbringing\, which is provided by the family. \nAlthough we still have plenty to do\, Hungary has already shown signs of success\, as the fertility rate and the number of marriages have risen here the most in Europe\, while the number of divorces and abortions are decreasing. Hungary’s family policy results also sparked interest among other states\, more and more countries are curious\, meanwhile\, we are also actively looking for a way to learn more through international best practices. \nToday\, the traditional family is being attacked and questioned by many. This is why this year’s Budapest Demographic Summit IV. is more relevant than ever. Our goal is to create a platform where it is possible to jointly reflect on issues and share experiences in order for us to be able to leave a thriving nation that carries forward family values and protects the environment for our children. \nI wish you a fruitful discussion. \n  \nPROGRAM AND INFORMATION: https://budapestidemografiaicsucs.hu/en \nREGISTRATION: https://budapestidemografiaicsucs.hu/en/registration \n

SUMMARY:Growing up and out of poverty: Lessons from cities for the EU Child Guarantee
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on children\, disrupting their schooling\, affecting their mental health and well-being\, social contact and even nutrition. As more parents lose their income\, child poverty is increasing. Fresh new evidence from cities shows that more and more young families with children are asking for help from social services\, being among the ‘new urban poor’. Children living in the most deprived urban areas are at three to ten times higher risk of poverty given the accumulated disadvantages. This crisis puts at risk the last decade of progress in cities to reduce child poverty and promote equal opportunities for all children. \n\nWhat lessons can we learn from cities on what works to reduce child poverty?\nHow can the EU Child Guarantee make a real difference for children in need at local level?\nHow can investment in children be prioritised in the EU’s post-Covid recovery?\n\nJoin us to discuss these questions with Brando Benifei\, MEP\, and rapporteur on the EU Child Guarantee; the European Commission and city leaders from Milan\, Rotterdam\, Leeds\, Glasgow and other European cities. This event will launch a political dialogue between EU and city leaders to deliver an impactful EU Child Guarantee\, leaving no child behind\, regardless of where they live or come from. \nMayors and deputy mayors will present new city pledges on reducing child poverty to the European Pillar of Social Rights within the context of Eurocities ‘Inclusive Cities for All’ initiative. City leaders will share their local recovery plans with municipal investments in children and their ideas for collaboration with the EU and national governments for making best use of EU funding to support children in need. \nThe online conference will take place on 18 February @10.00 – 12.00 CET on Microsoft Teams in English. \nTo register and receive the link to join the event\, please click here.
