SUMMARY:Happy Homes\, Happy Society?
DESCRIPTION:5th Interdisciplinary and International Conference on the contribution of domestic life in a time of social changes\n\nThe 5th Home Renaissance Foundation Conference will explore the contribution of the home to the wellbeing and happiness of individuals at all stages of life and\, by implication\, to wider society. It will be a great opportunity to demonstrate the vital role of the home in connecting and nurturing individuals through shared values\, work\, and purpose. \nThis conference builds upon the Home Renaissance Foundation’s (HRF) proven expertise in gathering world-class academics and professionals to present multidisciplinary research and experience relating to the life and work of the home. There is a clear public as well as academic and professional engagement with the topic of the home and its effects on society. \nThe 5th Conference will generate new material suitable for publication as a part of a growing series on topics relating to the home\, but should also be a point of reconnection with and refreshment of themes explored in earlier HRF conferences. This will promote future evidence-based discourse and policy-making. \nThe conference will be organized into two streams: ‘Happiness linked to activities of the home’\, and ‘Housing\, connecting and social interaction’. Both streams will have keynote speakers\, paper givers in dialogue\, roundtable sessions and workshops. \nAcademics and experts from different perspectives will present their research through video accessible on our website and social networks. \nThe renowned economist Lord Layard\, as a part of his contribution\, will highlight the need for policies to support parents and children\nas these are the key relationships in promoting happiness and well-being in the home for individuals\, families and wider society. \nFrom the point of view of Communication and new technologies\, Prof. Bakardjieva will analyse to what extent digital media have invaded and eroded our private sphere and how  they have changed our relationships and even our domestic activity. \nProf. Wessels will focus on the ways in which the increasing use and reliance on digital connectivity and datadriven services is underpinning developments of ‘connected homes’. ‘Feeling at home’ summarises the multidimensionality of wellbeing. It conveys how material living standards\, services\, information\, security\, communication\, relationships and companionship create homes. \nThe philosopher Maria Pia Chirinos will delve into the importance of the recognition of care by citizens to achieve a more humanised society. We come from the era described as “the civilization of work” and according to Chirinos care should be recognised as a property of all human work\, and as a key to humanising a civilization that has made technology and environment into its gods. \nDr. Thunder reflects on the role of the neighbourhood as a specific dimension for a healthy relationship between the home and its members and society at large. The differences between the terms family\, home\, community and society will be exposed. \nDr. Davies will put the historical point of view in this conference with an analysis of the structure of homes and why. He assures that there is evidence that shows that happy homes make for a happy society but that even in the way houses are designed there are economic\, social\, political\, or ideological influences. It states that the design of a home is derived from pre-established ideas about how people should live and what the nature of their family should be. \nFinally\, Prof. Agnieszka Nogal from Political Philosophy suggests turning to the classical model of thought to find a relationship between households and the public sphere since liberal theory does not conceptualize this relationship. Prof. Nogal affirms that homes are essential for public space since they are the place where not only children\, but every citizen grows and develops. \nResearchers from 9 different countries have sent their papers and will participate in the online workshops to be held in 2021 in which they will share their studies.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Families and the Economy
DESCRIPTION:The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints\, represented by Latter-day Saint Charities in New York and Geneva\, and the European Union & International Affairs Office in Brussels\, is pleased to invite you to join us for the next episode of “Fortifying Families” webinar series. \nEpisode 2\, “Families and the Economy” will air live on Tuesday\, October 13 at 9:30 AM ET (New York) / 3:30 PM CEST (Brussels). Registration is required and free of charge. \nDuring our last episode\, our speakers agreed that families should be seen as economic units. They not only contribute economically to society\, but can raise children who will be productive members of their communities. Good policymaking should consider families as countries’ most important economic investments. Appropriate fiscal policies will support financially stable families and help others to move above the poverty line. Additionally\, children raised in financially stable families are also less likely to engage in high-risk behaviors (such as substance abuse and early sexual debut). \nThis episode is organized in partnership with the School of Family Life at Brigham Young University\, and the European Large Families Confederation. It will run approximately 30 minutes. We encourage active participation from the listeners. If you wish to do so\, please use the space provided on the registration form\, or during the webinar\, to suggest questions for our guest speakers.  \nPanelists: \n\nDr. Spencer James\, Associate Professor\, School of Family Life\, Brigham Young University\nMaria Regina Maroncelli Florio\, President\, European Large Families Confederation\n\nHosts: \n\nFrancesco Di Lillo\, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints\, EU & International Affairs\nRyan Koch\, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints\, UN & International Affairs\n\nRegistration HERE

SUMMARY:International Advocacy Online Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The 8th Edition of the International Advocacy Workshop (IAW) will take place on 9th\, 10th\, 11th September\, 2020\, from 3:00 pm to 6:30 pm Central European Time. Due to COVID-19 pandemic it will be held online by the International Federation for Family Development in collaboration with Instituto de la Familia (Universidad de la Sabana\, Colombia). The Workshop will have no cost for participants and will be conducted in English. \n  \n\nAs usual\, it is mainly oriented to entry-level professionals or students of social studies/political sciences or a related field who demonstrate a strong interest in family issues and want to gain experience in the work of International Organizations\, as well as other practitioners. They will come from diverse geographical\, cultural\, and academic backgrounds. \nThe course will critically assess the field of international human rights and development advocacy\, its institutions\, strategies\, and key actors. It will explore how domestic\, regional\, and global policy strategies are set. Also\, it will promote discussion on various challenges that family friendly advocates face together with a range of stakeholders\, including governments\, international institutions and the private sector. \nIt will consist of a three-day educational alternative program with diverse lectures\, initiatives and interactive discussions: \n– Lectures: oral and audiovisual presentations by an expert or specialist. Convey critical information and theories. All are expected to actively engage. \n– Interventions & Good Practices: active discussion led by a moderator with the participation of policymakers and practitioners with local or regional experience on family policies’ design\, implementation and evaluation. Participants have a role that may involve a written/oral intervention and group discussion. \n– Interactive Discussions: hands-on debates to finalize a statement with evidenced-based policy recommendations within the framework agreed (Child Development\, Youth Transitions\, Intergenerational Relations). \nThese interactive discussions will be preceded by meetings of local groups (virtual or face-to-face\, where possible) to discuss and draft a proposal about one of the following outcomes: \n– a statement for the Unicef Executive Board on child development;\n– a statement for the UN Commission on Social Development on youth transition;\n– a statement for the UN ECOSOC High-level Political Forum on intergenerational solidarity. \nA consultation on future Workshops (if they should be online\, programme and logistics) and possible local actions to disseminate the contents and reach other stakeholders and interested persons will also be part of these discussions. \nEvaluation will be based on class participation\, results of the interactive discussion and a final paper. \n  \n2019 International Advocacy Workshop (Budapest) … \n2018 International Advocacy Workshop (Madrid) … \n  \nBACKGROUND NOTE \nThe topics of the workshop will be the three main aspects of family care:\n– Child development.\n– Youth transitions.\n– Intergenerational solidarity. \nThey will be analyzed in the light of the Inclusive Cities for Sustainable Families Project\, the COVID-19 crisis\, the preparations for the 30th Anniversary of the International Year of the Family and the Sustainable Development Goals 1\, 3\, 4\, 5\, 8\, 10\, 11 and 16. \n1. Cities have been and will be at the center of this pandemic and its aftermath. \n2. The challenge to make them inclusive\, safe\, resilient and sustainable has failed because: \n– it exacerbated the urban divide that resulted from a long-term failure to address fundamental inequalities and guarantee basic human rights;\n– critical systems have been disrupted or overloaded: supply chains and social care\, but principally healthcare;\n– it has revealed gaping holes in our care infrastructure\, as millions of families have been forced to navigate this crisis without a safety net;\n– the improvement in air quality and environmental noise reduction shows the need for a shift to green\, circular economies to prevent disasters and climate change. \n3. The family has had to face all these limitations and has proven to be the reference point and the authentic pillar of society. \n4. Today the Venice Declaration is important\, but tomorrow it will be even more important to build a new world: it is an excellent political-administrative programme. \n5. It is therefore necessary to outline the model of a city that places the citizen at the center of its concerns and the family as the necessary environment for it. \n6. Taking into account the Curitiba Manifesto\, the ways to reach this goal should also take into account: \n– an inclusive city is a shareable city;\n– an inclusive city is a connected city;\n– but\, more than anything\, care should be supported and promoted in every domain\, placing family care as the basis for it. \nAPPLICATIONS \nCV and a cover letter should be sent to un@iffd.org before 31st July.

SUMMARY:2020 International Day of Families “Families in Development: Copenhagen & Beijing+25”
DESCRIPTION:This year’s 25th anniversary of Copenhagen Declaration and Beijing Platform for Action come at the time of one of the most challenging global health and social crises. The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic brings into sharp focus the importance of investing in social policies protecting the most vulnerable individuals and families. It is the families who bear the brunt of the crisis\, sheltering their members from harm\, caring for out of school children and at the same time continuing their work responsibilities. \nAs the world struggles to respond to the COVID-19 crisis\, there is a real opportunity to rethink and transform the way our economies and societies function to foster greater equality for all. In doing so\, gender equality will not be achievable without greater equality in families\, and that on this\, and so much else\, the Beijing Platform for Action continues to provide a visionary roadmap of where we need to go. \nUNDESA (UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs) will celebrate the 2020 International Day of Families online. \nRegistration is required by 12 May. Please use link below: \nhttps://desasocial.formstack.com/forms/idf2020 \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email and by 14 May another email containing information about joining the meeting. \nFor more information please contact the Focal Point on the Family at kaczmarska@un.org. \nBackground notes.

SUMMARY:Demographic Outlook for the EU in 2020: Understanding population trends in the EU
DESCRIPTION:This policy roundtable presents the 2020 edition of the EPRS’s ‘Demographic Outlook of the EU’\, which tracks demographic change at European level. The study uses the latest data from Eurostat and the United Nations to explore the main demographic indicators\, such as the median age\, fertility rates or life expectancy\, comparing them between EU Member States and between the EU and the rest of the world. \nThe dramatically ageing population of the EU has serious implications across a wide range of policy areas\, including the economy\, healthcare and pensions. Free movement within the EU and migration from third countries also play an important role in shaping demography in individual Member States and regions. \n  \nVenue: Library Reading Room\, Altiero Spinelli Building\, 5th floor\, European Parliament\, Brussels \n  \nPROGRAMME \n13.30 Welcome by Anthony TEASDALE\, Director General\, European ParliamentaryResearch Service (EPRS)\, EP \n13.40 Keynote remarks by Othmar KARAS\, Vice-President of the European Parliament \n13.50 Presentation of the ‘2020 edition of the Demographic Outlook of the EU’ by Monika KISS\, Policy Analyst\, Economic Policies Unit\, Members’ Research Service\, EPRS \n14.10 Roundtable discussion with: \n\nRainer MÜNZ\, Expert in Demography and Migration\, Knowledge Centre on Migration and Demography (KCMD)\, JRC\, European Commission\nDeša SRSEN\, Member of the cabinet of Dubravka ŠUICA\, European Commission\nDaniela VONO DE VILHENA\, Research Scientist\, Max Planck Institute forDemographic Research; Scientific Coordinator\, Population Europe\n\nModerator: Etienne BASSOT\, Director\, Members’ Research Service\, EPRS \n14.40 Questions and interventions from the floor \n

SUMMARY:Youth\, Family and Europe
DESCRIPTION:The National Association of Large Families in Hungary (NOE)\, MEP György Hölvényi and the International Federation for Family Development (IFFD) invite you to participate in a Conference on Youth Transition. \n Venue:         European Parliament\, JAN 6Q1 \n                        (Rue Wiertz 60\, 1047 Bruxelles\, Belgium) \nDate:             18th February 2020\, 15.00-18.30 \nRegistration: fill the online application form. \nDeadline for application: 30th January\, 2020 \nYouth Transition invites young professionals to Brussels to address and discuss youth transition from several perspectives (education\, employment\, housing\, founding a family\, etc.) through the eyes of MEP’s\, decision makers\, young professionals and representatives of international NGO’s. \nParticipants will also have the opportunity for networking and sharing views at an intensive preparatory workshop in the morning of 18th February 2020 guided by leading figures of the conference. \nFurthermore\, a background and comparison of youth transition will be provided in the 20th century and today\, the beginning of the 21st century. \nIn the 20th century\, the economy underwent a major restructure. Governments encouraged more young people to complete secondary school in an effort to increase the knowledge and education levels of the labour force. The result was mass education and a credentialled workforce with less full-time work available\, but it also included youth unemployment and underemployment. \nIn 2020\, young people are required to navigate in a much more complex transitional terrain. Unlike their predecessors\, it is common nowadays for young people to experience non-linear\, fragmented and extended youth transitions. Family support can be the key to overcome difficulties\, also avoiding social costs on public health and other consequences of social disintegration. \nWe want to empower attendees to stand up\, to open a dialogue and to discuss with experts and decision makers the following: \n\nThe role of families in supporting youth transitions from school to work and\, ultimately\, youth employment outcomes with a view on the Sustainable Development Goals.\nThe role of family policies in helping families to fulfil that role.\nThe timing and ways of founding families for young couples.\n\nThereby the conference intends to provide clues for a better navigation in post-secondary education\, job search\, employment\, family support and starting a family heading for a better future of the young. \nMore info: international@noe.hu

DESCRIPTION:Would you like to enjoy a day with your whole family in Madrid’s Amusement Park for just 60 euros? On Saturday 12 October we will be celebrating Large Families Day in this park\, a day in which all large families associated with an Association integrated in the Spanish Federation of Large Families (FEFN) will enjoy a flat family rate. In other words\, by presenting your membership card of any of our associations\, you can purchase your tickets at the single price of 60 euros\, regardless of the size of your family. \nThe day is organised with the idea of offering large families the possibility of enjoying a day of family leisure at an affordable price. Before enjoying the attractions for everyone\, and after a brief presentation by FEFN President Benito Zuazu\, families will have the opportunity to attend the performance of a family musical by “La Patrulla Canina”\, especially aimed at the youngest members of the household. \nThe event is aimed at large families and to enjoy the special price will be essential to present at the box office the membership card of any association of the FEFN. \nPre-registration \nEach family will buy their ticket directly at the box office on the same day (12 October)\, although for organisational reasons it is necessary to register beforehand with the Large Families Association to which they are associated. \nIn addition to requesting the membership card\, the Park reserves the right to request any identity document (ID\, passport\, driver’s license) that proves that the person carrying the membership card is the holder of it. On the other hand\, it is recommended that families carry a photocopy of the large family title in the event that the number of children is not updated on the membership card\, except in the case of babies\, who do not need entrance. \nIn addition to the flat rate\, families will have a 10% discount on catering on that day on presentation of their membership card (except at the La Posta kiosk\, the Nickelodeon Cafeteria and Domino’s Pizza). You can also bring food and drinks from home to eat in the areas set up for this within the park. \nIf you can’t all go together \nIn the event that one of the family members cannot come at the same time as the rest\, for work\, studies\, etc.\, may go later. The family will buy at the box office\, with their membership card\, the number of tickets equivalent to the number of family members\, and will keep one for those who arrive later. You will have to meet him at the door and provide him with the entrance to be able to access the premises. Entrance tickets must be introduced through turnstiles at the entrance. \nTIMETABLE OF THE DAY \n9.30 a.m.: Ticket office opening hours\n10.00 h: Opening of the doors of the Park and access to the zone of companies.\n11.00 h: Starflyer Square. SUMMARY:Conference: "Shaping a healthy environment fit for children"
DESCRIPTION:Families want a healthy environment for their children to thrive and develop their own wings. This year\, we celebrate the 30 years of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. For the occasion and with Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) in mind\, in Helsinki on 3-4th October 2019 under the Finnish Presidency of the EU\, COFACE Families Europe and Vaestoliitto (the Family Federation of Finland) will host a gathering of family professionals on the topic of shaping a healthy environment fit for children. This is an open conference\, and we are aiming to gather between 80-100 key stakeholders from Finland and Europe. \nTaking a holistic family perspective and multi-generation approach as a starting point\, we will use this opportunity to: \n\nConsider different areas (education\, nutrition\, early childhood education care\, environmental risks\, child-friendly cities\, family circumstances) which impact the health and well-being of children;\nBring to the fore the expertise of the COFACE network and consider together how to strengthen the child health perspective in different policy areas;\nUse the conference as an Open Space for family professionals to meet\, exchange\, network\, collaborate\, and build transnational dynamics;\nUse the brainstorms and exchanges to develop the first elements of a 2030 compass to guide the work of COFACE and partners to ensure we can develop measures to build a healthy society\, environment and economy fit for children.\n\nThis meetup will start on 3rd October with a Spotlight on Finland : Round table on evidence-based methods on family work. There have been sustained national efforts to compile evidence-based methods on family work\, which can be found on the “Early Intervention” online platform.  Similar approaches exist in Sweden and Norway but this is quite a new trend in support programmes for families. A representative from the European Platform for Investing in Children will also take part in this session to bring a European perspective to the discussions. \nOn 4th October\, we will open the conference with keynotes on the new Finnish Child Strategy and an overview of child well-being across the EU. Then the learning and networking with happen through two channels: Open Spaces and Networking Hotspots. \n\nOpen Space  1\nAge-appropriate comprehensive sexuality education for children in Finland: Delivery\, advocacy and building support\nOpen Space  2\nBuilding child-friendly spaces and cities for well-being \n\nOpen Space  3\nInclusive early childhood education and care – a great start for children with disabilities\nOpen Space  4\nThe health impact of environmental risks for children with special focus on air quality and endocrine disruptors. \nOpen Space  5\nNutrimedias: a training on the impact of advertising on the food and nutritional choices of children \nOpen Space 6\nA family environment at risk of poverty: the economic\, social and health consequences for well-being of children\n\nSee full programme. \nJoin us! SUMMARY:III Budapest Demographic Summit
DESCRIPTION:After 2015 and 2017\, the Budapest Demographic Summit (5th and 6th September\, Budapest) will beheld for the third time as a prestigious international forum that gives an opportunity for political actors\, decision-makers\, church and civilian leaders and representatives of the scientific community to share their ideas and experiences with each other. \nDemographic processes fundamentally determine our future. Overpopulation and the threat of the disappearance of shrinking and aging nations create challenges for our communities; therefore demographic issues need to be discussed openly. \nAt the turn of the 20th and 21th centuries we face an unprecedented phenomenon: certain nations seem to have renounced their future. Not enough children are born\, cradles are empty. In other parts of the world demographic growth takes place: several nations double or even multiply their population in just a few decades. There are those\, who see an opportunity in these parallel processes and would channel the demographic surplus of the thriving nations to countries with shrinking population. However\, there are those – among them Hungary – who say that they are capable of changing these trends and bringing an end to population decline relying on their own resources. This is a difficult challenge that requires strong families and an effective family policy. \nWe announced a family friendly turn in Hungary in 2010 and nowadays more and more countries think alike. However\, similar values and family-focused attitudes do not mean uniformity: different countries have developed diverse solutions and good practices. A high-level conference such as the Budapest Demographic Summit provides an excellent opportunity for the stakeholders involved to think together and learn from each other. \nThe unique “Hungarian model” means a value driven and family-centred policy. Among others\, we have included the protection of family\, marriage and childbearing in the Constitution of Hungary\, we have doubled the state budget for families in ten years and we have established an objective to stop the population decline not by mass immigration but by strengthening the Hungarian families. \nThanks to its success\, our model has attracted more and more attention from our foreign partners and we are eager to share our experiences and to learn from others as well. \nIn the Budapest Demographic Summit\, along with the Prime Minister of Hungary\, several heads of state\, church leaders\, decision-makers\, experts\, economic actors\, representatives of the media and non-governmental organizations give lectures\, share their thoughts about the role of family in managing demographic processes\, the impact of family and population policies on competitiveness\, sustainability and developing future strategies. \nWe live in a changing and altering time\, when decisions need to be made on how we imagine the new way of coexistence that determines our future. Families\, the cornerstones of society are strengthened and thus the current unfavourable demographic processes become manageable or individual interests overcome community aspects endangering the future of nations\, peoples and families. The stakes are high\, common thinking and cooperation is the way forward for which the Budapest Demographic Summit provides an outstanding space.” \nAll the information about this important event can be found on https://bdselsoacsalad.hu/en

Nowadays\, NOE has about 70 000 members and more than 200 local organisations.\nNOE is the largest family organization in Hungary. With their activities they are striving to be present in various civil representative bodies which might have an impact on legislation. They offer counselling and help-lines for free on various topics including general legal advice\, housing\, consumer protection\, child raising\, etc.\nNOE has also many activities for member families and holds meetings and conferences for experts\, including events with an international scope. \nIFFD \nThe primary mission of IFFD is to support parents in their educational work within functioning families\, helping them develop their full potential as educators of their children with no discrimination on the grounds of race\, color\, religion\, sex or origin and based in the conviction that this is an unavoidable task for parents\, and it must have the recognition and support of institutions and social partners.\nIt was established in the United States\, as a non-confessional\, non-profit\, non-partisan\, independent and private federation of Family Enrichment Centers. With more than 8\,500 volunteers around the world\, IFFD programs are currently offered in 70 countries worldwide.\nIFFD holds general consultative status with ECOSOC\, a position only granted to 3% of Civil Society organizations working in United Nations. IFFD has participated in different Expert Group Meetings and co-organizers of United Nations events. Also\, it has been part of innovating projects of the European Union and UNICEF regarding the role of families in society.
