Toolkit for Higher Education Institutions in the Case of Students Raising Children

To foster inclusive learning environments, higher education institutions can implement these supportive strategies to deal with the issues, challenges, and situations students with children and families face.

By NOE

This toolkit was developed within a 30-month Erasmus+ partnership project led by the Hungarian Association of Large Families (Nagycsaládosok Országos Egyesülete – NOE). The project aims to reduce the barriers faced by students with children in higher education and to support universities in developing more inclusive, family-friendly systems. The project places the integration of students with families into higher education activities at the centre of institutional practice.

The toolkit builds on comprehensive extensive research examining the challenges families face in university life and the skills educators need to respond to these challenges effectively. By combining the diverse expertise and perspectives of an international consortium, the project contributes to shared European priorities and supports the development of comprehensive practices aligned with the European Education Area.

By focusing on strengthening key competencies such as empathetic communication, flexibility, adaptability, resilience, collaboration, and the effective use of digital technologies, the toolkit highlights several factors that are essential for creating inclusive learning environments for students with families. This allows educators and institutions to consider the real-life needs of student parents when executing student-centered learning, and promotes a culture in which academic participation, progression, and completion can successfully coexist with family life, in line with broader European strategies on equality, care, and inclusion.
