Romania: A family with three children needs over 14 000 RON (2 800 EUR) per month just for a decent living

Starting from the data published by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and Syndex Romania for the year 2025, the Romanian Large Families Association ASFANU has calculated the minimum monthly consumption basket for a decent livelihood for large families in Romania.

In Romania, a family with three children needs over 14 000 RON per month just for a decent living, and these expenses increase with the number of children:

  • a family with 3 children – 14 152 RON (2 830 EUR)
  • a family with 4 children – 16 935 RON (3 387 EUR)
  • a family with 5 children – 19 718 RON (3 943 EUR)
  • a family with 6 children – 22 501 RON (4 500 EUR)
  • a family with 7 children – 25 284 RON (5 056 EUR)

According to the National Institute of Statistics, the average net monthly salary in the economy in June 2025 was 5 539 RON (1 107 EUR).

Moreover, according to the study “Taxation of Labour in Romania”, conducted by Deloitte for the Concordia Employers’ Confederation, Romania has one of the highest effective tax burdens on employees, at 41.5%. Parents in large families pay these taxes without any consideration for the number of children they support or for the minimum consumption basket required for a decent standard of living.

These figures show the widening gap between the real cost of living for large families and the income realities in Romania. When a single average net salary covers only a fraction of a family’s basic needs, and taxation fails to take into account the number of children or the minimum consumption basket, families are left to carry a disproportionate burden.

Romanian Large Families Association – ASFANU uses data, evidence, and lived experience to highlight these realities and to advocate for policies that genuinely support families with three or more children, because a decent life for families is not a privilege, but a necessity.
