In Portugal, the tax system is complex, as well as access to some measures with specific application for large families. That is why the Portuguese Large Families Association (APFN) develops, annually, mechanisms to facilitate and help families to plan their finances.
APFN has chosen as one of its main banners to ensure greater equity in tax and consumption treatment.
With this in mind, in January the APFN launched the IRS (Personal Income Tax) simulator, for income earned in the previous year. This tool allows families to estimate whether they will receive a tax refund from the IRS or whether they will have to pay any additional tax.
Regarding the Municipal Property Tax (IMI), an annual tax paid to municipalities, there is also an APFN’s own tool for families to check the amount they will pay if they own a house. In this context and in the same tool, we also inform families about the existence of Family IMI in their municipality and whether they can benefit from it.
When buying a car in Portugal or imported, large Portuguese families are entitled to 50% exemption from Vehicle Tax (ISV) when buying a light vehicle with more than five seats. The APFN also dedicates a specific space on its online platform with information and applicable legislation.
