The National Bank of Romania estimates an inflation rate of 11.2% in the second quarter of 2022, and this situation will lead to a dramatic decrease in purchasing power, especially among families with 3 or more children.
According to a study conducted by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, the consumption basket for a family with two children was 7278 lei (aprox. 1 470 euro) in September 2020, respectively 6954 lei (aprox. 1 400 euro) in 2019. Starting from the calculations made by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and the consumer price indices for January 2022, ASFANU – The Association of Large Families – estimates the consumption expenditure for a family with three children at the level of 8362 lei (aprox. 1 690 euro), and for a household with 4 children at the level of 9198 lei (aprox. 1 860 euro).
The following categories of expenditure were taken into account for the calculation of the consumption basket: (1) Food (2) Clothing and footwear (3) Housing (4) Housing equipment (5) Household expenditure (6) Household and personal hygiene products (7) Services (8) Education and culture (9) Health care (10) Recreation and leisure (11) Family savings fund.
According to the data released by the National Institute of Statistics (Coordinates of living standards in Romania), as the number of children in the household increases, the average monthly income for a person decreases. Thus, the monthly income for each member of a family with 3 or more children will be directly affected by price increases.
On the other hand, the Institute of the Romanian Academy for Quality of Life Research considers that a family with two children can live decently with the amount of 4200 lei/month (aprox. 850 euro) (February 2022). In this case, only the consumption of strict necessity goods and services was taken into account, without education, culture, health, vacation, etc.
The total income per household in the third quarter of 2021, in nominal terms, was 5704 lei (aprox. 1 150 euro), well below the threshold required for a family with 3 children (8362 lei / aprox. 1 690 euro),) or 4 children (9198 lei / aprox. 1 860 euro).
