Hungary – For Family-Friendly Higher Education: Results of the Erasmus+ NOE Program

The Erasmus+ research led by the National Association of Large Families (NOE) aims to explore the situation of student parents in Hungarian higher education and propose solutions to overcome the barriers they face. The program’s findings so far highlight the need for significant structural changes to reconcile academic studies with family life.

The research has identified three key areas for improvement: the importance of flexible study options, childcare services, and financial support. Flexible study arrangements—such as online courses and personalized schedules—allow student parents to manage their studies alongside family responsibilities. Additionally, access to childcare facilities on university campuses, such as daycare centers and baby-friendly rooms, is critical. The research also revealed that without financial aid—such as scholarships and social assistance—many student parents cannot continue their education.

NOE firmly believes that starting a family and pursuing education are not mutually exclusive, but achieving this requires flexible study options and adequate childcare services.

In the next phase of the program, NOE aims to develop concrete recommendations for higher education institutions based on the findings and support their implementation. The program not only seeks to improve the lives of student parents but also contributes to building a more family-friendly society in the long term.
