Croatia: Elementary and high school students travel by train for free

The government passed a decision on free rail transport for primary and secondary school students throughout Croatia. The decision on this pilot project take effect from October 1 until December 31, 2022.

Primary and secondary school students throughout Croatia will travel by train free of charge . The decision on this pilot project was made by the Government at yesterday’s session, and it will last for 15 months. Free travel includes unlimited use of train transport until December 31, 2022. This benefit will be available to 780,000 children and primary and secondary school students.

In addition to students’ daily trips to and from school, this pilot project also includes occasional train journeys such as day trips, field trips, doctor’s trips, holidays and other trips.

The implementation of this project will contribute to increasing the mobility of children and students, stopping emigration to urban areas and supporting demographic revitalization, improving the living standards of citizens, revitalizing passenger train traffic in underdeveloped areas and encouraging the use of rail transport. In addition, the development of integrated passenger transport will be significantly strengthened, with the possibility of abolishing parallel lines of rail and bus transport, according to the website of the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure .

The value of this project is around 30 million kuna. According to data from 2019, children and students made 3.3 million train journeys, and 90 percent of students used subscription tickets.
