Romanian Large Families Association (ASFANU) brings the voice of large families to the SHE MAP European dialogue

On May 22, the Romanian Large Families Association (ASFANU) participated in the SHE MAP – Women Between Representation and Realities event in Brașov, represented by Brenda-Andreea Piuaru, ASFANU’s Secretary General, a professor at Transilvania University of Brașov, and mother of 4 children.

The event is part of a European project involving researchers from Transilvania University of Brașov and academic partners from Italy, Switzerland, and Spain. Hosted by Zbor Hub Brașov, it brought together researchers, professors, business representatives, and civil society organizations for an open dialogue on financial autonomy, leadership, motherhood, and the gap between social representations and women’s lived realities.

During the discussion, ASFANU highlighted the experiences of mothers raising three or more children. Brenda-Andreea Piuaru spoke about the stereotypes often associated with large families, the social pressures mothers face, the invisible work involved in raising children, and the challenges of ensuring that the realities of large families are accurately represented in public discourse.

Beyond statistics and academic concepts, the conversation focused on real-life experiences and the need for greater empathy, recognition, and support for mothers and families with multiple children. It also emphasized the importance of public policies and social narratives that better reflect the diversity of women’s experiences and contributions.

ASFANU is proud to have contributed to this important dialogue and to bring the perspectives of large families into discussions that shape more inclusive and family-friendly communities.
