New Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family in Greece

ASPE, the Supreme Confederation of Multi-Child/Large Families’ Parents of Greece had been asking for many years for a Family Ministry. The new Government set up after the elections of 25th of June now includes a new Ministry that is responsible for Social Cohesion and Family. It consists of three pillars / General Secretaries: (a) demographic and housing policies, (b) solidarity / welfare and poverty fighting policies, and (c) gender equality and human rights. 

The new Minister is Mrs Sofia Zacharaki (photo) and her CV follows: 

She is a graduate of the Department of English Language and Literature of the Athens School of Philosophy with postgraduate studies in Comparative Pedagogy and Administration of European Educational Organizations of the University of Athens with further studies in teaching English at the Institute of Education, University of London. In 2015, she represented Greece in the IVLP (International Visitor Leadership Program) program as a scholarship of the US Department of State on “The Role of Public-Private Partnerships in the Reconstruction of Economies”. She has worked as a teacher in private and public schools. She, then, worked for the Ministry of Education in the European Union department and in the Lifelong Learning and Youth Secretariat.

Speaks English, Spanish and French.

Her political course: advisor to the minister on International and European Relations at the Ministry of Development from 2012 to 2014. In August 2016, she was appointed deputy spokesperson for New Democracy party (in Government), while in March 2019, she was appointed spokesperson for New Democracy. In March 2019, she was appointed Spokesman of the New Republic and in July 2019, she was appointed Deputy Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, responsible for matters of Primary and Secondary Education and Special Education. In January 2021, she assumed the duties of Deputy Minister of Tourism.
